NipperĀ the alert terrier with an ear cocked to listen to the phonograph was immortalized in a painting Ā byĀ Francis BarraudĀ that later became theĀ RCA Victor trademark.

The image of the adorable little puppy sitting with a cocked head next to a gramophone is etched into our collective minds.

NipperĀ (1884ā€“1895) was aĀ dogĀ fromĀ Bristol, England, who served as the model for a painting byĀ Francis BarraudĀ titled "His Master's Voice".

Nipper was aĀ mixed-breed dogĀ and probably partĀ Jack Russell Terrier,Ā or "partĀ Bull Terrier".Ā He was named Nipper because he would "nip" the backs of visitors' legs.

Nipperā€™sĀ  story stretches back to #Bristol where scenic artistĀ Francis BarraudĀ of London saw his little dog, Nipper, sitting attentively in front of the talking machine. Barraud was so impressed that he decided to put it on canvas.

Berard tried several times to publish his painting but was repeatably told that:

ā€œDogs Donā€™t listen to Phonographsā€
He persisted and named the piece:
ā€œHis Masters Voiceā€
This image eventually became the basis for the dog and gramophoneĀ trademark, one of the world's most famous that was used by several audio recording and associated company brands: IncludingĀ Berliner GramophoneĀ and Berliner's American successor theĀ Victor Talking Machine Co.Ā (later known asĀ RCA VictorĀ and thenĀ RCA Records);

The ā€œHis Masters Voiceā€ trademark is still instantly recognized today and is in the top 10 of ā€œFamous Brands of the 20th Centuryā€.Ā #Nipper has not only become the famous symbol of RCA, but also an enduring symbol to the world.Ā (dogco)
